Ellie the Elephant Never Forgets

Ellie the elephant was known for three things: her floppy ears, her wiggly walk, and her incredible memory.
One hot afternoon, the herd marched through the jungle, looking tired and thirsty. The watering hole they always visited had dried up!
“Oh no!” cried the little elephants. “What will we do?”
The grown-ups scratched their heads, but Ellie just twitched her trunk and said, “Don’t worry. I remember something…”
The Mango Tree Shortcut
Ellie closed her eyes and thought back. She remembered being a calf, following her grandma through a twisty path. At the end was the biggest, juiciest mango tree in the whole jungle, with a secret spring bubbling nearby!
“Follow me!” Ellie trumpeted proudly.
The herd stomped after her as she led them off the main path. Along the way, Ellie even remembered a silly rock shaped like a chicken and a log shaped like a crocodile.
The younger elephants giggled, “She remembers everything!”
A Sticky, Silly Detour
But memories can be tricky. Halfway there, Ellie remembered another detail, “Don’t step in the mud puddle!”
Too late. SPLAT! The youngest elephants slid right in, trunks-first, and ended up covered in mud from ear to tail.
“Oops!” Ellie laughed. “Guess I should’ve reminded you sooner.”
The herd shook off the mud, giggling so hard they nearly forgot they were thirsty. Even mistakes, it seemed, could be funny with Ellie leading the way.
Memory Saves the Day
Finally, Ellie pushed through the bushes and, ta-da!—there stood the giant mango tree. Sweet fruit hung from every branch, and just beneath it sparkled the hidden spring.
The herd cheered and splashed happily in the water. The little elephants slurped mango juice until their trunks were sticky.
“Ellie,” the leader said with a smile, “your memory saved us!”
Ellie twitched her ears proudly. “Well, an elephant never forgets… especially where the snacks are!”
And from then on, whenever the herd was in trouble, they knew exactly who to follow- Ellie, the elephant with the memory as big as her heart.
