Buddy wasn’t just any dog. He was a scruffy, tail-wagging, treat-loving golden retriever with a nose for sniffing out interesting things. He lived with 9-year-old Mia in the cheerful town of Willow Bend, where every day was an adventure waiting to happen.

One sunny afternoon, Buddy was digging near the old tree in Mia’s backyard (where he wasn’t supposed to dig) when his paw hit something hard.

Clunk!

He barked excitedly until Mia came running. “What is it, boy?”

Sticking out of the dirt was an old, wooden box with strange carvings and golden hinges. At the top was a message:

The next morning, Mia packed a backpack with water, snacks, and dog treats. Together, they followed the map to the park, where the first clue was hidden under the bridge.

It read: “Where paws have played and laughter stays, dig where daisies face the rays.”

Buddy sniffed until he found a sunny daisy patch. Mia dug gently and pulled out a second clue. The map led them through playgrounds, past the old wishing well, and into the woods behind the library.

Every clue involved something only a kid or a pet would notice, like a squirrel’s favorite tree or a trail of paw prints in the mud.
